Man jailed for making hoax calls17/06/2011
A Mansfield man has been sentenced to eight weeks in prison for making hoax calls to the emergency services.
Timothy Milnes, 24, of Birks Road, admitted four counts of sending a false message to cause inconvenience, annoyance or anxiety at Mansfield magistrates’ court on Tuesday.
Milnes had made the calls to the police and fire and rescue service from a mobile phone at house in Simpson Road, Mansfield, in December 2010.
Mansfield town centre Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant Eddie Brudzinski said: “This sentence is significant and underlines the fact that making hoax calls to the emergency services is a very serious matter indeed.
“Diverting the police, fire service or ambulance service from genuine emergencies could have implications of life or death for those who actually need their immediate assistance.
“Whatever the motivation, there is no excuse for making such calls, nor, as this case demonstrates, is there any guarantee of anonymity. We have the technology not only to identify numbers and the locations of calls but also, through voice analysis, to confirm who it was who made the call.
“Although Milnes was arrested within days of making the calls, it is been the voice analysis that has helped in no small way to prompt his admission of guilt in court.”
Station Manager Neil Bolton, of Nottinghamshire Fire Control said: “We recently launched a new initiative working closely with the police to tackle anti-social behaviour, of which hoax calls are a part. As a result, we have seen a reduction in the number of hoax calls received. This sentence also proves that the initiative is working.
“As part of the process we have compiled a list of phone numbers from which hoax calls are made and have the authority to cut off the phones belonging to persistent offenders. Our control operators are also challenging callers more if they suspect they are malicious, which is all helping to combat the problem.”
